What is a Seed?

seed

A mature fertilized ovule of angiosperms (flowering plants) or gymnosperms (conifers, cycads, and ginkgos). Seeds enclose an embryo that contains a food reserve for growth after germination.

Seeds contain endosperm, which stores starch and other nutrients that enable the rapid growth of an embryo. They also store oil, which is used to make a plant’s leaves and fruits.

Shipwreck & Iceberg

One hundred years after the RMS Titanic sank, it is still the most famous shipwreck of all time. Built to be a “unsinkable” vessel, the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage in April 1912 and sank in the water, killing more than 1,500 people.

In the years after Titanic, icebergs continued to pose an increasing threat. Luckily, modern mariners have the tools to detect icebergs in advance of any chance of collision.

Using fixed-wing aircraft, the International Ice Patrol (IIP) tracks icebergs in the Atlantic Ocean throughout the ice season. The group combines information from flights with current and wind data to predict iceberg movement.

Researchers have discovered the wreck of a merchant steamship that tried to warn the Titanic of an iceberg before it sank. The SS Mesaba sent a radio message to the Titanic on April 15, 1912, while it was crossing the Atlantic. But the warning did not reach the Titanic’s main control center.

Wild Horse Island

Wild Horse Island, located on Flathead Lake about ten miles north of Polson, is a magical place with more history than you can shake a stick at. The name alone suggests a story and even the short boat trip to this island on the west side of Flathead Lake is a delight.

In the past, Wild Horse Island has been home to a dude ranch and girls’ camp. Today, it is a state park.

The island is also home to five wild horses. These animals were transferred to Wild Horse Island from Utah, where they are considered feral.

The island is also home to bighorn sheep, mule deer, waterfowl, songbirds and bald eagles. It is also known for its Palouse Prairie grasslands, one of only three such biomes in Montana.

Frozen Forest

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops III game, Corvus corrupts John Taylor and his team in the Frozen Forest. He explains the environment to them as follows:

The land that is covered by the forest is taiga, or boreal forest. These areas experience extreme conditions that include long winters, limited sunlight and frozen ground.

Despite these challenges, animals thrive in the taiga. Many migrate to places with more favorable conditions, while others hibernate for the winter.

They can survive by storing food and water in their bodies or in burrows. They also use snow for insulation and to protect their homes from the cold.

To conserve wild plants, botanists collect genetically representative samples of endangered species and store them in a seed bank. This collection of seeds can enhance restoration efforts and make the difference between extinction and conservation in the wild.

Farm

In farmer-managed seed systems, farmers and peasants use their local knowledge and experience to manage, select, enhance, store, multiply and plant seeds, in a way that upholds their ecological and social benefits. These include nutritious food, sustainable livelihoods and a diversity of culturally appropriate varieties that adapt to a range of stresses such as climate change and pests and diseases.

Across Africa, millions of small farmers and peasants supply the majority of all seeds planted on biodiverse farms for local consumption, through traditional seed selection and sharing practices. These local seeds are diverse and culturally appropriate, and they are known to be reliable, productive and adaptable to agroecological conditions.

However, industrial seed corporations and their host governments are using well-funded promotion, subsidies, coercion and advertising to displace diverse and customary local seed systems with one based on hybrids designed for monocultures and chemicals. This strategy is reinforced by international trade and intellectual property agreements that require African states to join the Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), which protects and restricts farmers’ rights to freely use and share seeds.

What Are Regular Cannabis Seeds?

Regular seeds are the natural offspring of a pollinated female cannabis plant. They have a 50% chance of developing into either male or female plants.

During germination, these seeds are exposed to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity that may affect their sex. They can also develop into hermaphrodites (plants that produce both male and female flowers).

They are cheaper

Regular seeds are cheaper than other types of seeds, and they’re a good option for new growers. They come with unaltered genetics, so they’re more resistant to pests and diseases than feminized seeds.

They’re also easy to breed with, and can help you create new strains with interesting phenotypes. But they do have their own set of problems, too.

Unlike feminized seeds, regular cannabis seeds produce plants that have a 50/50 chance of becoming male or female. This means that you’ll need to sex them before flowering, and remove males when necessary to ensure your harvest is potent and healthy.

However, you can also find feminized seeds that are guaranteed to be bud-producing females. These are a better option for beginner growers, because you won’t have to worry about accidentally pollinating males or having stray ones sneak into your crop.

They are easier to grow

Compared to other types of seeds, regular seeds are easier to grow. Their predictable nature means they’re more suitable for beginners and those with limited space in their growing areas.

Regular cannabis seeds usually produce 50/50 female and male offspring, which is perfect for cultivators who want to ensure a stable yield. However, these plants also produce fewer THC-rich flowers than feminized seeds.

Feminized seeds, on the other hand, have been bred using agronomic techniques to remove the chance of a male plant growing. This allows breeders to create new cultivars and produce superior clones without worrying about them becoming hermaphrodites.

While feminized seeds may not be as pure as the seeds they replace, they do allow growers to practise their cultivation skills and learn more about growing in the process. They’re also an important part of keeping a diverse gene pool. This allows breeders to create new strain phenotypes and develop interesting genetics. These traits are hard to achieve through breeding with a single variety.

They are better for breeding

Regular seeds are the original cannabis seeds and are a great choice for growers looking to try their hand at breeding. They have a 50 percent chance of emerging as either male or female plants, which makes them ideal for both phenohunting and back crossing to create new cultivars.

They also have a higher genetic stability than feminized seeds, which means they can be kept for taking cuttings and clones (known as asexual reproduction). These are both useful practices that feminized seeds can’t offer, so regular seeds are always worth considering when it comes to breeding your own strains.

They are often used by old school growers and breeders that want to preserve their favorite genetics in seed form. They’re also a good option for those who are trying their hand at hybridization, as they can be combined with other cannabis strains to produce better-quality clones.

They are more versatile

When it comes to breeding and cloning, regular seeds are more versatile than other types of cannabis seeds. They have a 50% chance of emerging as either male or female, making them ideal for breeders to use to create new cultivars.

In addition, they are more resilient than feminized seeds and are also easier to grow. Hence, they are ideal for beginner growers who want to learn how to properly grow cannabis.

Sunflower seeds are a great source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and improve heart health. They are also a good source of zinc, folate and vitamin E.

How Regular Seed Is Produced

regular seed

Regular seeds are the result of a cross between a male and female Cannabis plant. This means that their genetic information contains both sexes and they will show one or the other depending on several factors.

Regular seeds are less expensive than feminized ones and can be used to breed your own strains. They also give you a higher chance of finding new phenotypes.

Breeding

Breeding occurs when two different plants or animals produce offspring that display a particular trait. The traits are then passed on to subsequent generations.

In the cannabis world, breeding has led to the development of feminized and autoflowering seeds. These seeds promise to grow plants that are cannabinoid-rich, bud-producing, and free from male flowers.

Regular seed is another option for growers. It allows you to experiment with different strains and terpene profiles.

You can even combine different genotypes and phenotypes to create new cultivars. It’s a fun and rewarding way to keep up with the latest developments in marijuana genetics.

One of the drawbacks of feminized seeds is that they run the risk of becoming hermaphrodites when they are stressed, such as by topping or fimming. This means that you will need to be extra careful when handling feminized seeds.

Cloning

Cloning is the process of producing an individual from a cell that has been transferred from another adult organism, often with the purpose of improving genetic traits. This technique has also been used to produce fabled strains of plants that are not available in the wild, and to create livestock such as goats, pigs or cattle.

Clones are generally produced by asexual means, such as parthenogenesis or budding. Some animals, including aphids, rotifers, certain lizards, snakes, birds and reptiles, also reproduce by this method.

The rate of self-fertilisation in clonal plants depends on the clonal architecture, which determines whether a clone grows in a guerrilla or phalanx manner (Lovett-Doust 1981; Barrett 2015). In a guerrilla strategy, long distances between vegetative ramets reduce inter-genet distances and facilitate cross-fertilisation by introducing more inter-genet dispersals.

A number of concerns have been raised regarding cloning, most notably that it could lead to discriminatory behaviour towards clones because it would blur the boundaries between generations. However, critics have argued that this concern is based on a fallacious inference and does not constitute a valid reason for avoiding cloning.

Genetics

The study of genes – the fundamental units responsible for heredity – is one of the central pillars of biology. All living things have many genes, which control the chemical reactions in their cells.

During reproduction, these genes are passed from parents to offspring. They also vary among individuals within groups, in a process called natural selection.

Genetics is the study of how genes are passed from parent to offspring, and how these variations affect traits such as health and growth. It was largely developed in the 19th century by Gregor Mendel, who characterized the laws of heredity and discovered that genetics is a system of inheritance.

Seed size and number are important life-history traits in cereal crops that can affect their fitness, yield, and market value. Understanding the genetic architecture of these traits and any possible trade-offs between them is crucial for predicting their impact on crop productivity (Venable 1992; Sadras 2007).

Cost

The cost of regular seed production is a significant part of the overall costs associated with producing cannabis seeds. This is because the seed grower has to factor in all the expenses of running the business, including rent, energy and water.

Generally, it is much more expensive to produce high-quality seed than lower-cost varieties. This is because of the intensive development and research that goes into these seeds.

As a result, the price that seed banks charge for their products is largely determined by supply and demand. This means that the prices of seeds go up when seed stocks are low and down when they are high.

In addition, there are a number of ways that producers can reduce the cost of their products. For example, some seed companies offer discounts and promotions. These discounts can help to significantly decrease the cost of seed products.
